Submit a closure request for an IBC MUA

A MUA is eligible for closure if your research activities no longer include the use of r/sNA and biohazardous materials. Please note, if you plan to continue to store these materials in your lab you must maintain an IBC MUA. If you have any questions about how to dispose of these materials please reach out to askEHS@cornell.edu.. Follow these steps to submit a request to close your MUA to the Cornell IBC.

  • At the top of the screen, use the IBC menu to switch to different screens, including Search IBC MUAs.

  • Scroll down the page to the Search Results. You should see a list of MUAs in which you are listed as part of the research team.
  • Locate the MUA you need to submit a closure request for and click on the edit button, MUA # or title to open it.

  • Once your MUA opens, locate the Initiate Closure blue box at the top of the MUA. Choose Close to start the process.

  • Complete the closure request and click Save. A notification will be sent to Cornell IBC.

  • If additional information is needed, you will receive an email from cu_ibc@cornell.edu.
  • An important note about record retention for closed MUAs: Principal Investigators must maintain all research data generated from projects involving IBC materials for at least three years after completion of a study. Records may need to be kept longer if other regulatory requirements apply. For funded research, confirm the sponsor’s records retention requirements before disposing of research records. If multiple regulations apply, keep the data for the longest required amount of time. Refer to Cornell’s University Policy 4.20, Research Data Retention for additional information.
